It’s taken me a long time to jump on board the band wagon and purchase the cult ‘They’re Real’ mascara by Benefit, I keep telling myself it is actually shameful how long I have left it considering my love for all things Benefit. I’ve read countless reviews on this product which have mostly been raving about the effects, with the odd one complaining of dryness or flaking once applied. Guess you can’t please everyone right? Anyway, this month I decided I could hold out no longer and parted with £19.50 in the hope of achieving the ‘length, volume, lifting and separating’ of my lashes that Benefit claim comes with the use of this magic little wand.
Before we get down to the nitty gritty, can I just say how cute the packaging is? I always find Benefit have the most adorable looking products, it seems a shame to stash them away in a make up bag! I love the silver casing for this mascara, and the coral-y pinky font is so appealing to me. The applicator is plastic, not something that normally works all that well for me because I find they don’t tend to grip my lashes as well. This mascara changed that! The wand is quite big and chunky, a little like Urban Decay Big Fatty Mascara (another of my favourites) which I love as you get a really generous coating of the formula and it really plumps up my lashes. The formula is thick and creamy, without being gloopy, and an absolute dream to apply. One thing that really did impress me was the fact that I didn’t get the dreaded smudge marks around my brow bone during application. Long lashes run in my family (lucky me) and with a lot of mascaras, especially cheaper ones, I can always count on a handful of dark smudges near my eyebrows that appear while the product is still wet. A real annoyance so the fact that They’re Real avoided this gained it big brownie points with me!
Once on, I can safely say there is a reason this has been the best selling mascara in the UK for the past 2 years! One coat gave my lashes some real oomph – volume, length and separation are all there in abundance. The colour pay off is great, the blacker the better for me so I was certainly happy with that. The only thing that bugged me a little was that I found it a bit tricky to apply to my lower lashes because of the size of the applicator, and it kind of made my bottom lashes a tad too dramatic for an every day look so I’ve just been using this on my upper ones. That aside, I have fallen for They’re Real in the same way I fell for Big Fatty Mascara, and both will forever be a make up bag essential for me.
